Are you Team Coffee or Team Food?
Imagine this... you've just woken up from a restful night of sleep. Your eyes flutter open and you slowly lift into a seated position. The sun is peeking over the horizon and you throw your arms in the air to get that good ole' morning stretch. It's time to get up and mosey into the kitchen and when you get there, what do you reach for? A coffee cup or a plate?
Studies have found that enjoying a cup of coffee first thing in the morning can spike cortisol and insulin levels. Strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased blood glucose response to food by 50%, suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body's ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast. This could also translate to intense bouts of hunger, unsettled stomach and feeling jittery throughout your day.
If you find yourself feeling unsettled, jittery or starving, try pressing pause on your coffee maker until you've had a bite to eat!
